This is a compact, rugged and accurate compass for a low price.

I carry it on every hill or forest walk and it is part of my sea kayaking kit.

Silva manufactures (Ok in Taiwan) and offers quite a large selection of different Types & Price Points of Compasses. I had a friend borrow my military tritium compass sometime ago and lost it somewhere in the Rockies. I’ve bought and used some other ones thru the years, and now planning on going on a long Summer Camping trip on New Zealand’s South Island, where parts of LOTR was filmed. I’m interested in that one River, that looks very much like the White or Buffalo River in Northern Arkansas, which is just a whole lot of fun, to canoe with your Bro’s!

I bought this ‘Engineer Lensatic Model’ based on a it’s Best features that other Reviewers have already covered, but after working with a few days, I really like that it is Rugged, It looks to be Heavy-duty Aluminum (making it light weight, as opposed to Brass), with a HD Powder Finish, so it shouldn’t flake anytime soon, fits perfectly in my palm.

Very Simple to use, it also has a removable Rotating Bezel, and is a LIQUID-filled Compass, with Luminous markings.

The Price is Right (under 100 bucks) and will be Excellent to practice on, until I get one my active duty bro’s to order the latest Tritium model next year.

It is a solid compass, made in Taiwan.

    Very light.

however, it does take it a while to get it’s bearing and can fluctuate fairly significantly, and likes to be on a very level surface, thus making it less than ideal for it’s purpose.

That said, it is much better than similarly priced all plastic types.

  4. Shaun Lankford says:

This is a nice sturdy compass. It is pretty heavy duty, and works as well as anyone could expect. It will definitely be of great assistance to me as I prepare for precise placement of my camera in preparation of a nice sunset or sunrise.

The Silva Lensatic Compass is an intresting piece of gear…

    Pros-

Heavy Duty- Strong Casing, Feels Durable

Accurate- I’m not an enigineer, but it does point North

    Silva- Good Brand

    Cons-

Cover- When you tilt the cover to far back, it becomes loose and flops around

Luminous Points- Lets just say, they should have left that part out of the desciption… (They’re aren’t any)

Overall a good compass. However if you’re looking for something to orienteer with like the Scouts, this is NOT it. It is an entirly different design. Also, this is not the Military one, their’s is fifty bucks and is made by Tritium. By the way- DON’T buy it from Big Edge Sports. They extented they’re shipping estimate twice, and were a general pain in the a** to work with. Buy from Amazon, or Poor Fish Outdoors.
