I wore this tool out in 3 hours cutting through tile and concrete shower wall with a diamond blade. The job required accuracy to the 1/32 of an inch. The cuts were difficult, but not forced. It started out fine, but at the end of 3 hours the blade was wobbling so much it was unusable. Apparently there is no bearing on the cutting wheal end of the drive gear. What ever bushing or gasket they use instead is not up to the task.

Lowes gave me my money back thankfully.

I have had good use from Porter-cable tools up til now, but I am one of these people who use a lot of power tools and know good ones when they see them. This is

    not one!

i bought this grinder at lowe’s last week, and was pretty excited about trying one of porter cable’s new line of tradesmen tools — but i am extremely disappointed.

i used it for the first time today and it makes a terrible chattering noise upon startup and wind-down, sounding like it’s broken. one of the fellow shop tenants heard me using it and came over and said “that doesn’t sound right.” he couldn’t believe it was brand new. (and yes, i checked that it’s put together correctly.)

there is simply an excessive amount of runout on the spindle, so the thing wobbles and just sounds awful, like it’s hitting the sides of the guard — even though it isn’t. plus, the balance is terrible. the makita grinder that my shopmate has works like a dream compared to this. with the makita you end up looking at the work and the shadow/light lines you’re making, not worrying about the tool, the noise, and the bad balance.

finally (and also very frustrating), the spindle lock switch is almost impossible to press in — it required 3 tries to get it to depress, and it doesn’t stay locked. the button is tiny and poorly designed. i even gave it to two shop mates to try, and they couldn’t get it to press down, or stay locked either. you actually have to hold it in while you change the disk. ugh. enough!

i understand that this item is a low-mid price grinder, and i understand that i may have just been unlucky, and got a lemon. however, porter cable is a fine company and, generally speaking, makes great tools — i have the classic PC router that is 15+ years old and is still a champ — so this tool is an embarrassment for them, and in my view, a black mark on their reputation. i hope the rest of the tradesman line is made better, otherwise they’re in for trouble.

shame on you, porter cable — quality control, reliability, and safety are way too important to have let this tool leave the factory.

i’m returning it and getting the Hitachi G12SR3, which has some good review history, is half the weight, and comes with a case & 5 free disks — for only $5 more.

I have not regretted it. The 7.5 amp motor on the PorterCable generates over 1 hp . The most for the other angle grinders in it’s class is 6 amps. The extended handle makes gripping the body of the grinder much more comfortable and allows a more secure and safer grip. The only negative I see is that the spindle won’t hold all grinder discs such as DeWalt without adding a 5/8 ” washer between the hold down plates.

This grinder is tough and the warranty/guarantee is the best I saw any where except for. a Milwaukee costing 3X as much, but the Milwaukee is in another class by itself.
