This is my third Norelco shaver in 26 years. It replaced a similar model I bought in 2000. My first was an old-school electric model. My last razor was rechargeable/water-resistant and I would be using it now but for the dead batteries. I found the cost of replacing them as uninviting as replacing them myself, so I went to Amazon and tried to find one at the same price point.
This razor works fine and I have no complaints about the closeness of the cut. But if you are used to the Norelcos of ten years ago, you may be disappointed. My old razor was hefty and had a satisfying “whirring” sound. This new model feels brittle and light, and sounds like a cheap clothes shaver.
The batteries hold a solid charge well over a week, like the old one did when new. Today’s batteries should last much longer than those of 2000, but the build quality makes me question whether the razor will outlive the batteries. The electrical cord is thin and uncoiled, while the old Norelco came with a heavy coiled cord (easier to store in the drawer).
The old model had a trimmer that flipped up AND down with a slide of the switch. This model flips up but you must manually fold it back into place when done using it. By now, you can guess that Norelco has been cutting quite a few corners.
All in all, if you’ve never used an electric razor before, you’ll likely be satisfied with this model. If you owned a model from Norelco’s golden years, you might want to consider paying a bit more for a higher end model that (I would hope) is sturdier.
I have a teenaged special needs child whom I have to assist with shaving. We are using a blade but thought that an electric might be more convenient and less time-consuming. He is sensitive to loud noises, so when I heard the purr of this razor, I was very pleased. However, I did worry that it was a little tinny or cheap-sounding. I tried it on myself first, and was so horribly disappointed. Realizing that it can take an electric a while to acclimate to one’s face (for reasons I have yet to understand), I still have to put tremendous effort into shaving with it, so much so that it irritates my neck beyond reason. I am not going to even try this on my son.
I purchased this Norelco 7810 to replace a Braun shaver that was not doing the job. Bottom line, this Norelco 7810 is excellent. Shaves close, does not require mutiple passes like the Braun. The Norelco is also very quiet. The trimmer is kind of cheap but the shaver is great. I would give it a strong buy recommendation.
I’ve owned and used several shavers over the years – bit of a gadget lover. While every man’s face and beard is different, for me this has to be the best shave I’ve ever had.
I was surprised that it was so good, since this razor uses the HQ8 heads which (supposedly) are not as “advanced” as the HQ9 heads on the 8000-series or the HQ10 heads on the top of the line Arcitec. But the proof is in the shave – this saved faster and closer than my Arcitec or Speed XL at a fraction of the cost.
You would not think that would be the case since the heads on the HQ8 have only one ring of slots and holes. The HQ9 and HQ10 have multiple rings with slots and holes. This is one of those cases where more is not better, and more expensive is not worth the cost.
Granted, the build quality on the 7810 is not nearly as good as the more expensive Norelcos. This is a very light shaver made mainly of plastic. But, Norelco’s have always performed very well for me, so I expect that despite the lack of heft, this will prove to be durable.
There are other 7000 series razors with the same HQ8 heads that should provide an equally good shave at a lower cost. I went with the 7810 mainly because it felt better (easier to grip) and the battery (faster to charge and holds the charge longer). But, if you’re looking for an equally good shave as the 7810 at a lower cost, and don’t mind a longer charge time, take a look at the lower models in the 7000 series. Just make sure it has the HQ8 heads (some 7000 razors ship with the HQ55 heads that have just slots).
I still like my Braun and Panasonic foil shavers, but the 7810 is going to be the first one I reach for. Highly recommend!
My boyfriend enjoyed this cutting system very much. It took him a few tries to get the hang of it, but it gives him a nice close shave.
