I have owned the DS 18DFL for 18 months. This is the worst drill I have ever had. Yes, the battery lasts, but the chuck is the worst! Very difficult to get it tight enough to use a drill bit–especially small ones. I have owned 2 competitors over the years and would never purchase Hitachi hand tools again. Hard to believe they field tested this model.
After buying several cordless drills in the $69-$100 range, I was always disappointed. I’m not a construction pro, just use this for around the property projects. I don’t know about the earlier reviews, maybe problems have been fixed since 2007-2008, but for $125 I have found this drill to be very powerful and sturdy, the chuck has never slipped and the batteries are not only powerful but last a long time and charge super fast. I am 100% satisfied with with the high quality construction and superior performance of this drill. In fact, I just finished a project 10 minutes ago with this drill and continue to absolutely love it!
I have to admit on this one, I was very displeased. I was told it was a “KIT”! Now to me a kit includes the 2 batteries, the charger, and a case! That was not the case in this matter. The only thing I received was a drill w/out a battery one, a charger, nothing. And to top it all off-I waited, and waited, and waited, and finally-after contacting the seller, and getting no response , did it finally show up. I left a message explaining my lack of satisfaction, w/ the hope of a reply telling me there was a mistake, and how they were going to make up for it by……. How about a reply of any sort? Nothing!! So, needless to say, I was- and still am, very unhappy w/ the seller! But the drill, works fine. Luckily I have an impact driver that is of the same brand, and voltage.( gotta have batteries right?)
This is a wonderful drill especially picked up for under $100 now that it’s a older model. The only issue I have is the chuck will not hold bits real tight unless you dial the clutch up so high where you would be doing nothing but drilling holes. Most all other drills I own or have used will hold bits tight without as much effort even at low clutch settings. I would have gave it 5 stars with a better chuck. Dialing the clutch up and down just to make a good bit change is a added hassle.
Don’t buy this drill its a waste of money. The chuck slips bad, lacks power, and is just plain irritating. It will piss you off to work with it.
